TREE TATTOOS

A look at hearts carved into the bark of American Beech trees used to proclaim the love.

The smooth, silvery bark of Fagus grandifolia (American Beech) is irresistible to lovers looking to proclaim their devotion to each other, somewhat reminescent of graffiti artists drawn to subway cars in the 1980’s.  These “tattoos” can’t be erased and the tree may live for 300 years.

While the beech survives, have these relationships?
